Congratulations to Roman

Congratulations to our own Roman Ship who recorded his third
consecutive first round stoppage at XFC:3 on their May 31st show.
Roman was facing a more experienced opponent in Nikky Kent in this
Heavyweight Pro MMA fight, but finished his opponent early with a
straight right-hand strike.

Rumble VII Thanks

Just to say a huge thanks to all who attended or boxed on Rumble VII. We had a fantastic evening of boxing, thrills and spills galore, and what really made the evening special was being supported by The Rifles. It was a privilege to have five members of 4Rifles boxing team in attendance. Three of the five will never box again after the injuries sustained in Afghanistan. One chap, Cpl Ferguson, came to us from Headley Court, where he is recuperating after losing both legs and an eye in a landmine explosion. He was on top form all night, and chatting to many of the crowd. This really brings home what these guys are going through.

We managed to raise over £7,000 on the night, and with other donations and sponsorship we are hoping to get to £10,000. This is a really tall order, but if anyone wants to contribute you can do that, and also read Simon Hills gripping account of facing me in The Ring at http://www.justgiving.com/Rumble-for-The-Rifles

It was a very special night, and thanks once again to you all. Now looking forward to Rumble VIII…!!!

Wallingford Pancake Race 2010

The club once again sponsored and organised the Wallingford Pancake race. We had a great event, the runners were cheered on by a crowd of over 200, and a special mention must go out to club member Viktor Kmec, who won the race in a nail biting final lap, and also managed to raise over £650 in sponsorship.

Overall we raised over £1000 for The Footsteps Foundation and much more for other local charities. If you want to see the BBC report on the event go to the link below, and watch out for that Darth Vader bloke…

All the fights were hard fought and competitive, but big congratulations to Jamie “The Force” Cressey and Mark “The Power” Powell for winning the Fight of the Night award, especially in their first ever Rumble, and Don “Ding Dong” Marsh for lifting the best boxer award in his fifth Rumble.

Prizefighter at The Bear

The hugely popular Prizefighter Series continues on Friday the 2nd of October with a third installment of Heavyweights battling it out for a 32K prize on the night. For anyone not familiar with the format, eight fighters box-off against each other over 3 x 3 minute round bouts, so you get 7 fights and one eventual winner who must win three fights on the night. All the action takes place over 2 hours. You can get more info at www.theprizefighterseries.com.

This installment see’s some great domestic fighters in the mix, including British Champ Danny Williams, Audley Harrison and Scott Gammer, among them.

Although we all had a great time going up to the last Prizefighter event at the Excel in May, this time I’m suggesting a venue closer to home. The Bear (North Moreton, see www.bear-at-home.co.uk) have agreed to let us have the back room, and the big screen TV to watch the action on the night. We should be able to organise a bit of a sweep stake and have a good night watching the boxing.

All club members and friends are welcome, the more the merrier. I will be getting there at 7:30pm, boxing commences at 9pm. Should be a lot of fun.

Mixed Martial Arts Classes

We have added a new class into the weekly schedule. Roman will be teaching a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) class at 8pm on Mondays.

For any of you unfamilar with Romans background, he is a 2nd Dan in Judo, was a Russian Military Sambo Champion and has a grounding in Ju Jitsu, Muay Thai and Boxing. He presently competes as a Cage Fighter, is undefeated and looking to move rapidly through the British Rankings in the coming months.

The class will cover all aspects of MMA for the complete beginner, whether just for self-defence, competition or just a fun and exciting workout. If you want to go more in depth, Roman is also available for 1-2-1 training at the club.
